Bridges Adult Transition Center
Lincolnwood, Illinois
The Bridges program services students aged 18 to 21 with special needs at Niles Township High School District 219 who are transitioning from high school to adulthood. Although adults with disabilities account for 26 percent of the U.S. population, few educational facilities exist that are dedicated to the support of these young adults during these formative years.
The new Bridges Adult Transition Center focuses on this transition by educating these young adults about various life skills, leisure skills, and vocational skills through simulated lab settings and learning environments. The program was previously housed in one of the school district’s existing high schools, and occupied only 2,700 square feet. Space issues always created limitations for the program. The vision of the educational program helped inform the district of how much space was needed for the Bridges facility. With this information, the district bought a vacated warehouse, and an adaptive reuse project was born that transformed the existing building to the new Bridges Center.
