Brandeis University, Samuel Lemberg Academic Center

The Brandeis University International Business School wanted to build a facility to expand its educational capabilities while seamlessly blending the new construction with the existing building, which was designed in the 1970s by Harrison & Abramovitz, to provide a unified, distinct facility. An important goal of the project was to create multiple overlapping points of activity throughout the building to stimulate interaction among students.
By extending the aesthetic expression of the existing facility, the Samuel Lemberg Academic Center comprises a series of continuous spaces, which enhance the flow of ideas inside and outside the classroom. Similar academic functions are clustered on either side of the bridges that link the new and existing buildings to transform the physical gap into a place where students and faculty converge. Social hubs are placed on opposite ends to encourage circulation from one building to the next.
The 25,000-square-foot complex provides a tiered classroom/lecture hall, a small library, conference areas, common spaces and faculty offices.
The focal point of the Lemberg Center is a double-height cyber cafe that is lighted from floor to ceiling by windows overlooking a wooded hillside.
