Bowdoin College, George H. Quinby House

The architect provided architectural and engineering services to convert Psi Upsilon, a vacant fraternity house at Bowdoin College, into Quinby House. The goal was to restore the 13,393-square-foot building to as close to its original appearance and plan as possible, while providing a functional, secure and comfortable space for 25 students.
Over the years, the house had suffered because of deferred maintenance but was still structurally sound. Much of the exterior had deteriorated or been replaced with inappropriate materials. Little evidence remained of the interior’s original appearance.
This project provides the college with a facility that is efficient, durable and easy to maintain. It sets a new standard for student housing on campus—one combining historic character with accessibility and life-safety features befitting a contemporary student residence. The college has referred to the house as “the crown jewel of the new (house) system.”
