Boston University’s School of Law complex overlooks the Charles River and occupies several buildings: the new Sumner M. Redstone building, the School of Law Tower, and the Pappas Law Library. The Law Tower and the Library were designed by Spanish modernist architect Josep Lluis Sert and were completed in the early 1960s. As is the case with many buildings of that era, the cast-in-place concrete had deteriorated significantly and needed substantial repairs. Additionally, the building’s original design and layout impeded the law school’s intended use and growth. A comprehensive renovation of the existing buildings and construction of the Redstone building were borne out of a Preservation and Development Master Plan that the architect completed in 2008. Completed in 2014, the Sumner M. Redstone building is a five-story facility containing classrooms, a mock court room, study spaces, lounges and social areas. Renovation and preservation of the existing 18-story Law Tower and the Pappas Law Library is due to be completed in fall 2015.
