Booker T. Washington High School

Completed in 1924 to serve Atlanta’s African-American population, Booker T. Washington High School is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been designated as a landmark building by the city of Atlanta, and notes among its graduates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Constructed in multiple phases, decades apart, the structure stands cathedral-like in its residential setting and displays an eclectic mix of medieval and Byzantine design elements. This project represents the most comprehensive renovation, building expansion and preservation effort since the school opened 83 years ago.
The project scope included exterior masonry restoration; reinstatement of the historic landscape; an exhaustive interior retrofit of partitions; and a replacement of all mechanical, electrical, communications, data and security infrastructure.
Building additions provide areas for enhanced arts education, a cafeteria, kitchen and library/media center to meet curricular and student demand. Equally as important, the additions created a courtyard in the heart of campus to enhance student life.
