The District Physical Education Center is a response to the challenge of blending school district and community-service needs. This growing suburban district needed a competition-level gymnasium that would provide adequate space for basketball, wrestling and volleyball programs, as well as adequate seating for local and sectional competition. At the same time, there was a need in the community for a fitness center and indoor pool.
This facility combines a 2,200-seat gymnasium, a community fitness center and natatorium. Prior to construction, the district reached an agreement to have the YMCA manage the fitness center and the natatorium. The master plan estimated that the YMCA would need 450 family memberships to operate successfully. On the opening day of the facility, it had more than 600 memberships and, within a month, the number of memberships had surpassed 800.
The opening of a new NASCAR track in nearby Kansas City, Kan., made Bonner Springs more prominent in the metropolitan area. The District Physical Education Center has become a point of community pride.
