Black Hawk College, Testing & Tutoring Center

With a focus on the success of its students, Black Hawk College identified the need to transform its underused Independent Learning Center into an engaging, dynamic, and collaborative destination to support the college’s tutoring, ESL, and testing functions.
The renovation of the outdated space into the new Tutoring and Testing Center has created a more welcoming entry to draw students into a common area consisting of lounge areas, study areas, and open computer stations, articulated by a dramatic linear wood ceiling. To address the previous lack of clear wayfinding, the common area provides students with visual access, through perimeter glazing, to the reconfigured tutoring, ESL, and testing spaces. The open configuration encourages the use of these services, while maintaining acoustical separation of the various functions.
The tutoring and ESL spaces have been reorganized in a flexible manner to encourage one-on-one and group collaboration along with access to various forms of technology for students. The Testing Center accommodates four distinct testing areas visible from a central proctor station.
