Belmont University, McWhorter Hall-School of Pharmacy, Schl of Physical Therapy and Dept of Psych.
Nashville, Tennessee
McWhorter Hall provides innovative learning spaces within architecture influenced by the historic campus. As Phase II of Belmont’s Health Sciences Complex, it is connected to the existing Gordon E. Inman Center that houses the College of Health Sciences & Nursing, of which the School of Pharmacy is a part. The structure is atop a four-level underground parking garage that reduces the building’s footprint.
Hands-on experiential learning components include a licensed campus pharmacy, which provides services to students, faculty and staff while also serving as a training site for student pharmacists. This places the School of Pharmacy as the only such school in the state in which students can gain experience working in a pharmacy developed as a component of the program. Belmont’s student clinic also was moved to this building and has a room dedicated for external practitioners to come to the university for consultations.
A green roof, surrounding a cupola that honors the university’s signature bell tower, mimics a cedar glade and provides extra insulation to reduce heating and cooling costs.
