Barkley Elementary is one of the first schools designed under the new 21st Century Education Initiative set forth by DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activities). This leading-edge facility endeavors to provide a learning environment that accommodates multiple learning and teaching styles, thus maximizing the value of the school’s curriculum.

Centrally situated within a dense residential population at Fort Campbell, Ky., it will accommodate up to 740 students during the day. After hours, the information center, large commons and gymnasium will serve as a community center for all residents on post.

Other amenities that make Barkley Elementary School an innovative and environmentally conscious facility:

•Inviting information center.

•Abundant daylighting into all learning spaces.

•Insulated concrete form (ICF) construction, allowing for a decrease in heating/air-conditioning loads served by the building’s geothermal mechanical system.

•LED lighting, solar-water heating and photovoltaic infrastructure.

•Rooftop learning garden.

With these assets, Barkley Elementary School is geared to improve the quality and enjoyment of education while helping to pave a new future for the next generation of well-rounded, capable individuals.
