Banquete Elementary School
Banquete, Texas
Banquete Elementary School is in the middle of cotton and grain country, a half-hour drive west of Corpus Christi in Banquete, Texas. The new school, in soft shades of green and earth tones of stone and masonry, rises from the black-clay flatland to welcome children from the surrounding small town and fertile farmland. Streets were closed, and traffic patterns were reconfigured and routed to facilitate a cohesive flow among the new elementary and the existing junior high and high school campuses.
Born of agricultural common sense and attitude, the pre-K to fifth-grade school reflects a cost-effective approach to durability, function and aesthetics, sparkled here and there with spring-like detailing of color.
The new campus separates bus and parent dropoffs. The front of campus is a highly visible check-in space for all visitors. Although this community is a “hug and handshake” zone, all doors are locked down.
The school has 25 classrooms, a science room, two fine-arts classrooms, two special-education classrooms, a life-skills classroom, computer lab, library with a stepped-floor reading area, reading classroom and speech classroom. The school also has a cafetorium with a raised stage and a small gym for school and after-school programs. The kitchen is centralized and sends meals to the two other campuses.
