Aplington-Parkersburg High School
Parkersburg, Iowa
An EF5 tornado ripped through the southern two-thirds of Parkersburg on Sunday, May 25, 2008. Lives were lost, and many were injured; the devastation the tornado left in its wake was indescribable.
Included in the destruction was the main high school. The architect assisted the high school in working with the insurance company on assessing the damage, working with structural engineers in order to determine that the building was damaged beyond repair, and eventually agreeing on a replacement cost to rebuild. The construction manager assisted with a quick rebuilding turnaround.
The schematic design, design development and final working drawings on the new high school were completed in just a few months. Construction began in September 2008, and the first phase, which houses classrooms and offices for students and staff, was completed in August 2009.
The second phase included the school’s secondary functions, such as the gym and auditorium, and was completed in November 2009.
