Ann Richards Middle School
Dallas, Texas
Ann Richards Middle School is a fresh model of how energy efficiency, educational requirements, safety and flawless design can come together. Educationally the school is designed based on the theory of "Grade Houses" where each grade is an insulated unit capable of unilaterally functioning. As a special feature, each "house" has a collaborative learning area adjoining the classrooms to encourage educational exchange between different classes. The large, naturally lit "Main Street" connects the academic wing to noisier spaces such as the gym and band units. This separation provides a buffer between the noisier wing of the school and the quieter classroom half, allowing for better student concentration. Another primary appeal of the "Main Street" design is that it allows educators to better supervise their students and ensure their safety through clear line of sight.
There are a number of learning kiosks spread throughout the common areas of the school that explain the benefits and usefulness of its design. The kiosks explain the geothermal system used in the school, the benefits of a white roof, and highlight the life of Ann Richards and other instructional features. Ann Richards Middle School’s clean approach to education is a model of what all schools should try to achieve.
