Andy Dekaney High School
Houston, Texas
Andy Dekaney High School is situated in a deeply wooded area of about 81 acres, with entrances and signage that create a park-like atmosphere. The facility was designed and built for a capacity of 2,500 students in grades 9 to 12.
The academic portion of the school is divided into four small learning communities of about 600 students each that are aligned vertically with grades 9 to 12. Each community has its own individual aesthetic and flexible area with passive supervision at the entrance and includes an administrative area, offices for the assistant principal and counselor, and a conference area.
The building includes a large-group instruction area, auditorium, coffee shop, band hall, choir hall, black-box theater, visual arts, career technology, a competition gymnasium and two practice gymnasiums, practice pool and other athletic spaces in addition to core areas such as the library and cafeteria.
Multiple display areas and visual connection into program areas enable the school to celebrate individual accomplishments.
The academic houses, administration, athletics, library, cafeteria, auditorium and large-group instruction area are connected to one another through the “Main Street” corridor. This main spine of the building consists of two-tier clerestory windows to bring in natural light. It also introduces views to the outside, while maintaining separation of noisy functions such as the cafeteria, band and athletics from quiet study and administrative areas.
