The re-emergence of the Wilson Charter School from the floodwaters that devastated New Orleans in 2005 played a crucial role in galvanizing the rebirth of the Broadmoor neighborhood and stands as a symbol of positive change in the New Orleans school system. The renovation of the 45,000-square-foot building and the addition of 45,000 square feet provides the latest in educational technologies and introduces sustainable practices as part of the curriculum.
The school is designed as a 3-D teaching tool. Every space is outfitted with visual cues—swooping daylighting shelves, quick-harvest bamboo flooring, photovoltaic solar collectors, a rainwater cistern, high-performance mechanical and electrical systems—that describe the use of natural forces and materials, and reinforce the students’ relationship with nature.
The social, historical and spatial context of the school is described in a mural installed in the windows overlooking the link between the new and existing buildings. Investigation of the mural enables students to explore their environment while establishing a connection to their past.
