As one of the most state-of-the-art track and field facilities in Pennsylvania, Altoona Area School District’s Mansion Park hosted a full schedule of events during the 1990s. By the end of the decade, the sand-based Omni Turf field was outdated and had reached the end of its useful life. To bring the park up-to-date and meet the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s latest standards, the renovation removed the existing artificial turf from the football/soccer field and replaced it with the Astro Turf 2000; reapplied structural spray and repainted the eight-lane running rack; and reconstructed field-event runways.
As a result of a quality installation of the existing field a decade earlier, only the Omni Turf and rubberized shock pad needed to be removed. After sand was vacuumed, the porous asphalt base remained intact. Astro Turf 2000 was installed and anchored on all four sides to prevent shrinkage or movement. Because of Mansion Park’s busy calendar of events, this project was completed on an accelerated schedule—between the mid-June graduation ceremony in the stadium and the beginning of football season in July.
