The project remodeled the existing student center at Alliant International University (AIU). This campus, originally known as United States International University (USIU), was built in the late 1960s. AIU decided the campus buildings were due for upgrades to reflect the 21st-century student’s lifestyle.
The AIU student body wanted the remodel to create a modern, open, “great room” with a flexible floor plan for students to relax in between classes. It also provides a meeting place for students and faculty. The students also wanted to be able to grab a snack or browse the Web on wireless laptops.
The design theme reflects a modern cafe using ambient lighting, multiple accent colors and patterned floor finishes. The architect and its team of consultants created a new environment that functions as the student body requested. The new atmosphere attracts more students than ever before. People tend to “hang out” for longer periods of time, with a sevenfold increase in sales compared with pre-remodel sales.
