Allen ISD STEAM Center
Allen, Texas
The Allen Independent School District’s two-story arc-shaped STEAM Center was designed to provide STEAM curriculum to high school students and an experience destination for elementary and middle school students. The center seeks to provide a foundational system that promotes curiosity, cultivates future-ready skills, and prepares students for success in STEAM-related areas. Designers and educators were influenced through tours of STEAM programs in the Seattle area, including Microsoft. Students, parents, community and business leaders and teachers created the conceptual design through VLK Launch.
The center offers specialized spaces such as engineering and robotics labs, makerspaces, computer maintenance instructional programs, science and physics labs, math classrooms, and studios for the architecture and interior design programs. Collaboration spaces, common areas, and huddle rooms are situated throughout the facility to provide a range of places for groups to collaborate on projects. Throughout the center, visibility and transparency across disciplines create an open co-creative atmosphere that provides younger students a window to the advanced upper classes. The design integrates a rich outdoor setting that provides learning trails and ecological zones for exploration.
