Ten years after it was built, the LaHaye Ice Center was renovated in 2015 because of the rapid growth and popularity of Liberty University’s ice hockey programs. Locker and team rooms were added or reworked to accommodate each team, as were visiting team locker rooms. Spaces for staff offices, a weight room, athletic trainers, and hydrotherapy also were provided. Interior finishes were selected for their durability, especially in areas accommodating skate traffic.
Careful design of the addition was required to connect it to the existing pre-engineered metal building structure, as well as to allow the ice rink to remain undisturbed during construction.
Close coordination with the university throughout the duration of the project enabled the project to be completed within budget. The project was finished in seven months and opened in time for the start of the fall hockey season in late October.
