The expansion of the Roeper School’s upper campus presented an opportunity to design a ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY360COST PER SQ FT$208.00FEATURED IN2018 Architectural Portfolio commons that supports the school’s highly collaborative educational style. The addition of spaces encourages interaction and collaboration between middle and high school students. HMFH transformed the existing central courtyard into a new commons with a student dining area, flexible group and individual workspaces, and integration of evolving technology.
The design provides spaces for a variety of activities: the larger dining and collaboration spaces of the tri-level commons serve as the heart of the upper school campus; the third-floor mezzanine and repurposed second-floor library provide contemplative, focused atmospheres appropriate for small group work and one-on-one meetings. To support student health as well as energy efficiency, skylights bring daylight into the core of the space. Interior glazing enhances the visual connection between the surrounding corridors and the commons.
The design resolved challenges by accommodating an existing scene shop and boiler room within the courtyard, relocating building services, and ensuring the building was accessible.
