Milby High School, one of the oldest schools in Houston, brings modern updates and state-of-the-art technology to a historic school, built in 1926. Situated in an under-served part of Houston, the school is home to students from low-income families. Designed to accommodate 2,000 students, the floor plan features new academic wings on both the north and south sides of the historic main building. Preservation and the reuse of original materials work in tandem with the modern “neighborhood” layouts. Glass walls increase visibility, and enhanced technology brings past and future together in one design.

A hidden balcony stair, revealed during construction, was transformed into a social gathering stair above the student cafeteria. Sections of the 1930s gym floor were repurposed for the stairs, and today, students use it for studying, socializing and gathering.

More than a school, Milby High serves as an anchor in the community—a beloved facility that generations of people respect and admire.
