The LEED Gold-certified Wadsworth High School + Wadsworth Community Center has become the collaborative community hub of Wadsworth, Ohio. The 370,000-square-foot Wadsworth High School houses grades 9 to 12. The program provides integrated smart technology, 21st-century educational delivery, career technical training, and University of Akron credit courses. The facility includes a 786-seat performance auditorium, a performance gymnasium, a four-court field house with an elevated track, and an eight-lane competition pool.
The 70,000-square-foot Wadsworth Community Center program provides space for Summa Health System Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital physicians’ offices, a radiology lab and physical therapy, the YMCA/City of Wadsworth Fitness/Recreation Center, the Soprema Senior Center-Café, the Wadsworth Cable Television (WCTV) Station, and the Wadsworth Public Library Branch. Specialty areas include an indoor family aquatics center with water slides and a warm-water therapy pool.
The complex was built on a 98-acre middle-high school campus that remained fully operational throughout construction. As part of the project, a new geothermal system was installed beneath the athletic fields.
Wadsworth City Schools worked with Risinger + Associates (R+A) to develop a funding strategy centered on public-private partnerships, including allocations from the Ohio School Facilities Commission, sales tax revenue, partner contributions, a capital campaign and publicly issued bonds.
Risinger + Associates performed strategic programming, planning, design, documentation and construction administration for each partner, and facilitated collaboration throughout the project.
