Lassonde Studios at the University of Utah is a 400-bed residential entrepreneurship institute that contains a “student garage”—a flexible 20,000-square-foot making/planning/hacking space—and housing for 400 students ranging from freshman to graduate level. Designed by EDA Architecture in association with CannonDesign, this living-learning environment supports ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY306COST PER SQ FT$400.00CITATIONResidence Hall CitationFEATURED IN2017 Architectural Portfolio students by making innovation a 24-7 endeavor. Its interactive, interdisciplinary, immersive setting engages a range of users, accommodates a diversity of activities and fosters interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary “mash-ups.”
Unlike other mixed-use housing facilities, the building is designed to foster both digital and analog tinkering. It goes beyond the now typical high-bay warehouse spaces; movable partitions create a framework in which students interact and explore the physical and social relationships between design, human activity and environment at varying scales. Access to state-of-the-art technology provides a culture as nimble as a startup; housing units can be reconfigured as student needs evolve. Since it opened in 2016, Lassonde Studios has fostered 114 student and new venture development center faculty startups.
