DeKalb County School District felt that the key to achieving an appropriate solution for the new Elementary School building and site plan designs was to engage the team’s planners and the Community Focus Group in numerous work sessions. Through a progression of meetings addressing the project’s objectives and community concerns, the team’s planners were able to present the community stakeholders solutions specifically appropriate for them.
The heart of the school is the courtyard, which is directly accessible from the building’s exterior, the media center, as well as numerous other interior spaces. The school courtyard provides a controlled and landscaped exterior learning environment, additional play area and a welcoming space for after-school interaction and community programs. The cafetorium can be used for after-school community events, and can be securely separated from the remainder of the building.
The use of natural daylighting, with low-maintenance sustainable materials, ensure this school will provide a safe and functional environment for the children, parents, staff and community well into the 21st Century.
