Enka Intermediate School, ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY850COST PER SQ FT$205.00FEATURED IN2017 Architectural Portfolio for 850 fifth- and sixth-grade students, seeks to enhance teacher-student interaction. Elements of the design are drawn from the rich industrial history of the community, yet still incorporate state-of-the-art technologies.
Space flexibility fosters collaboration among students and teachers in a variety of organizational modalities throughout the day. Small-group breakout spaces are situated throughout traditional wings of classrooms to support project-based learning. The media center includes technology hubs, a maker’s space and video production capabilities. Arts classrooms, at the core of the school, are easily accessible from each classroom wing and are supported by a performance stage in the gymnasium. An outdoor classroom and garden provide additional instructional environments.
Energy efficiency is enhanced through sustainable concepts such as daylight harvesting, rainwater collection for garden irrigation, and high-performance HVAC systems. The facility is equipped with a sophisticated Building Automation System that provides energy usage information and can be monitored remotely by district personnel.
