Frederick County Public Schools sought to replace an outdated middle school and provide a critical asset for an underserved community. But rather than simply repeat the latest prototype design, county leaders saw an opportunity to set a new standard for middle school education in Virginia. What emerged was an aspirational, student-centric vision that balanced the need for a practical, affordable, sustainable solution with current research on effective teaching and learning, adolescent brain science, nutrition, health and well-being. The multistory design is organized into nine learning communities configured to promote interdisciplinary, collaborative, and self-guided learning. Built-in flexibility enables the facility to adapt to the varied needs of learners and support new methodologies as programs evolve.

Carefully developed daylight harvesting strategies, on-site water treatment systems, durable finishes, and efficient building systems will ensure that the facility is easy and affordable to operate and maintain for many years to come.
