Faced with aging, ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY840COST PER SQ FT$160.00FEATURED IN2016 Architectural Portfolio and underused middle school buildings, the Clinton Community School District decided to consolidate its middle school program in a single new building that would use space and district resources more efficiently. The gently sloping site contains a waterway that bisects the site and shaped the layout and orientation of the building, which was designed to fit the natural slope of the site.
The plan is compact and efficient. An open layout provides visual and physical connections among the various curricular areas and fosters a collaborative environment for students and staff. Strategic introduction of natural light into the central core of the building provides these spaces with a connection to the exterior. It also makes the building more energy-efficient by reducing artificial lighting requirements. A geothermal heating and cooling systems further enhances the building’s efficiency. A combination of metal panels, painted cement board panels, and precast concrete insulated wall panels was used to define the various volumes of the structure as well as signify the functions within.
