The Paul R. Brown EPIC Center, on the campus of Zane State College in Appalachian southeast Ohio, is a state-of-the-art learning environment. Challenged by a narrow, gently ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY600COST PER SQ FT$250.00FEATURED IN2016 Architectural Portfolio site between a hillside and a busy state highway, the design for the new facility takes full advantage of these conditions. Its position at the crest of the incline increases the building’s exposure and visibility.
Access across the highway to the college’s Willett-Pratt Training Center is provided via an enclosed pedestrian bridge, which not only provides a safe, convenient way for students to travel but also creates visual connectivity and cohesiveness between the college’s facilities. The curvature of the building mimics the lines of the pedestrian bridge and contours of the site; it makes maximum use of the narrow site.
The facility, which has received LEED Gold certification, is constructed of glass, steel and fiber cement architectural wall panels. Meeting the design needs of both students and the community, the EPIC Center and pedestrian bridge are the gateway to 21st-century learning and working.
