The new Brookwood Elementary School is a product of a prototype developed by the design team to enable simultaneous construction of three elementary schools. They will replace nine existing outdated and aging neighborhood elementary schools. Brookwood is designed to support two specific grade-grouping structures, K-2 and 3-5, in a “school within a school” format.

Other academic spaces flank the shared core. Learning studios, small-group instruction areas and large-group instruction areas provide spaces for individual, small-, medium- and large-group learning. Spaces traditionally used as vertical transition areas function as additional dynamic, large-group instructions spaces in the form of “learning stairs.”
The school incorporates sustainable measures such as ground source heat pump system, recycled/renewable materials, rain gardens, high-efficiency building envelope, and dimmable/daylight-controlled lighting systems. By consolidating the population of three inefficient buildings into one highly efficient facility, the district is reducing its overall energy usage.
