Derby North Middle School is a sixth-through-eighth grade facility that uses sustainable and learning-focused features, and emphasizes technology, energy efficiency, daylighting and a colorful, design-conscious interior. The school consists of a centralized entry/cafetorium, an athletic complex, three academic classroom wings, and three exploratory ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY900COST PER SQ FT$168.00FEATURED IN2015 Architectural Portfolio wings.
Upon entering the building, students experience the voluminous cafetorium. From here, one navigates the daylighted “Main Street” corridor to the classroom wings, or explores the athletic complex. Behind the cafetorium stage, a music suite doubles as a FEMA storm shelter. Classroom pods surround three courtyards designed for outdoor learning. The lower-level athletic complex includes a 1,000-seat gymnasium with perimeter track, a 400-seat auxiliary gymnasium, a multipurpose space and four locker rooms.
Interactive learning is supported by wireless technology that accommodates student iPads and flat-panel displays in all teaching spaces. Energy efficiency is achieved with a well-insulated building envelope, more than 150 heat pumps, specialized glazing, solar shades in large daylighted spaces, and solar arrays that feed power back into the school. The site uses low-maintenance, drought-tolerant landscaping.
