How can a Midwestern elementary school be closer to nature? The original Maple Dale Elementary School was based on a California concept that required young students to travel outside to reach core academic spaces. That created significant energy inefficiencies, security concerns, and complications during winter months. Maple Dale Elementary has long been known for embracing the arts. The new design encircles the “Imagination Center,” a flexible theater space that also serves as a creative hub for the other wings. With flexible layers, the stage transitions directly into the music study room.
Green initiatives are at the core of the Maple Dale design, including a high-efficiency geothermal well field and chilled beam mechanical systems, enhanced acoustics and daylighting controls, and creative landscaping that provides exterior learning spaces.
