Indian Mountain School is a preK-9 independent boarding school that serves 186 students on a 600-acre campus in Lakeville, Conn. Flansburgh Architects designed an 8,750-gross-square-foot music, art and technology building specifically designed for collaborative, cross-disciplinary, project-based learning.
The Student Arts and Innovation Center features three visual ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$320.00FEATURED IN2015 Educational Interiors ShowcaseINTERIOR CATEGORYStudent Centers/Service Areas studios, a fabrication lab, music rehearsal studios, practice rooms, a common room, a cafe, an office and storage space. It has welcoming spaces that include classrooms and labs with sliding barn doors that open onto a shared gallery, and offices and meeting spaces that open onto a visitor commons.
The flexible design provides a common space, which functions as a project space during the day and a student lounge with a kitchenette and café in the evening. The form of the building recalls a traditional New England barn with a sloped tin roof, exposed timbers and board, and batten siding. The large windows afford dramatic views of Indian Mountain, the school’s namesake. The western side of the building, particularly the common room, opens directly onto the landscape, and every classroom has a door to the outside.
