The Science I Seismic Renovation included the strengthening and conversion of an unoccupied 1970s wet laboratory building to a state-of-the-art facility for the School of Nursing and the departments of mathematics and philosophy. Eight general lecture rooms are furnished with the latest audio/visual equipment. The seismic upgrade is celebrated with interior exposed concrete shear walls displaying reveals and form tie holes to emphasize the structural nature of their strengthening function. These walls animate the corridors by providing a shift in texture and color along their length.

The building embraces sustainable features, including rooftop solar panels (with web broadcast of production), a new two-story light well clerestory that carries much-needed daylight to the building center, low-flow plumbing fixtures and hydration stations, as well as sustainable floor coverings, low VOC paints, counters and landscaping.
