Carter Lake Elementary School replaced an existing dilapidated building. The design has established the school as a community icon while providing a collaborative lifelong learning environment.

Brick patterning on the exterior conveys excitement and energy, yet emphasizes window and door openings, creating a rhythm along the building facade. The extended arched entry welcomes everyone.

Inside, students gather within the commons and learn about outstanding classwork and events identified through visual displays; participate in curriculum with numbers and letters displayed in the terrazzo floor; and congregate with peers, teachers (and parents) to remind them of the importance of education. 

Arches signify “portals” to the world of learning and provide direction to students in finding the different learning areas within the school. The discovery extends beyond engaging students and teachers to explore different learning styles, and elevates learning through bold color, dynamic architectural elements, technology and flexible furnishings.
