Adult learners have unique needs; they are autonomous and self-directed, with a need to connect learning to their foundation of life experiences and knowledge. To bring these learners together and relocate the college’s existing Adult Basic Education Center, Adult Workforce Transition and several other related departments from an off-site location ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$167.64FEATURED IN2011 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYInterior RenovationSUB CATEGORYRenovation the main campus, two separate, windowless industrial buildings were linked by a serpentine addition to become the new home for the programs.

Fenestrations were punched into the perimeter to flood the interiors with subdued natural light. The roofs were lifted to introduce clerestories to the interior classrooms and the large study atriums. The bricks on the newly combined buildings were stained to achieve consistency, and an angled addition was added to the south end to create a primary relationship with the main campus.

The 71,000-square-foot facility contains classrooms, computer labs, administrative offices, a learning center with testing and tutoring spaces, and student lounge areas.

The transformation from dark, industrial warehouse buildings to a naturally lighted, functional educational space was accomplished successfully.
