Different learning pedagogies and students with learning disabilities required a flexible environment to allow for the grouping of programs and access to shared spaces of administration, food service and group meeting spaces.

Overhead doors provide connectivity of learning spaces and maximize floor space. Encompassing a rural county that supports farming, livestock and the wine industry, the design team took this opportunity to reflect nearby structures with the exterior design. Through the use of color, abundant natural light, warm wood accents and views to the natural environment, the goal of a non-institutional building was achieved.

The desire for a sustainable learning environment and flexibility led to the design of a linear building to maximize optimal zoning of HVAC systems, which utilizes a ground-source heat pump. Rain gardens for stormwater control, interior lighting controlled by occupancy sensors, and a south-facing sloped roof for future photovoltaic array all contribute to this sustainable facility.
