The building’s exterior design and materials were selected to complement other campus buildings. The interior plan includes a vivarium, open and closed laboratories, and open and closed offices for investigators and their staffs. About 10,000 square feet of basement was left unfinished to accommodate future research needs.

More than 16,000 square feet of space is devoted to laboratories. Open labs are designed to accommodate and encourage interactive, interdisciplinary approaches to research and to make the space more adaptable for future use. Closed labs are designed for specific kinds of research and equipment.

The Amarillo Research Building was completed in February 2009.
