Temple University, Housing Master Plan

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Temple University is challenged by an increasing demand for high-quality student housing. In conjunction with First Worthing, a national provider of student housing, the design team developed a holistic housing master plan. The focus of this effort was to identify opportunities for new student housing while maintaining the context of the campus and preserving the ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONFEATURED IN2008 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYCampus Master Planning neighborhoods. Because Temple is in an inner-city urban area, special priority was given to issues such as pedestrian access, proximity to existing campus resources and security.

All urban-planning solutions link proposed housing interventions to the university’s pedestrian promenade, Liacouras Walk. Internal courtyards will connect directly to existing pedestrian ways, and provide security and private spaces while maintaining public access. The design also maximizes housing density, respects the existing scale of the context, and develops unit types that complement existing university-owned housing stock.
