The University of Utah Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building is a center for interdisciplinary collaboration on the University of Utah Health Sciences Campus. A key programmatic element of this building is learning space, programmed to include 43 flexible classrooms ranging from 15-person seminar rooms to 150-person lecture halls, and ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONASSOCIATED FIRMEllenzweig AssociatesCOST PER SQ FT$199.00CITATIONBronze CitationFEATURED IN2008 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYCommon Areas skills and teaching lab suites. To foster collaboration among the multiple health-science disciplines that use the building, student common spaces are designated as a second key programmatic element.

The solution to these program requirements was to provide both traditional and nontraditional common and collaboration spaces throughout the building. Learning occurs both in the classroom and in the spaces between, so the hallways and lounge spaces are designed with as much detail as the dedicated learning spaces. The common spaces are designed for both planned meetings and for chance encounters, to accommodate ad hoc learning opportunities, and to provide an atmosphere for each student’s learning style.

The Eccles Health Sciences Education Building is the first university and state of Utah building project to receive LEED certification.

“Very functional floor treatments. The flexibility of the spaces rings throughout.”--2008 jury
