Responding to an increase in student population, the University of Alabama recreation center expansion and renovation nearly doubles the complex’s square footage. The new colonnaded entrance provides a clear entry statement and increases campus visibility. The glass-enclosed lobby and skylighted concourse glow at night, inviting students to enjoy the amenities inside. The goal for this facility was to create an image of sophistication without sacrificing a sense of playfulness. Materials, colors and textures help achieve this balance. The porcelain tile floor pattern gives the concourse a sense of strength and timelessness, and is accented with elements of whimsy expressed by colorful fabric banners and custom tile surrounding the main columns. Natural light extends deep into the complex via the translucent skylight in the concourse and glass curtainwall in the lobby. Uplighting creates a cheerful glow in the concourse during evening hours.

“Good use of indoor and outdoor facilities to encourage physical education. Nice organization and entrance.”--2006 jury
