This was a joint-use project between the Lucia Mar Unified School District and the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education. Programming meetings and design charettes resulted in a building plan that was flexible and met the desired objectives. This included a larger serving kitchen, indoor and outdoor covered eating areas, and auxiliary space for physical-education ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$261.00FEATURED IN2005 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized drama programs.

The site planning was critical because the only available portion of land was oddly shaped and situated between two existing buildings with about 13 feet of grade change. The design approach incorporated the site’s steep topography. It transformed an underused area into the dynamic heart of the campus and created a new entrance. Design continuity and balance were created by selecting exterior colors and materials that tie together the new and existing buildings.

The multipurpose room can double as a classroom or 430-seat assembly space with retractable seating and a stage area. It also features clerestory windows that provide natural lighting and overhangs that moderate the summer heat.

The serving kitchen houses a walk-in refrigerator and freezer, dry storage area, ovens, range, warmers, serving windows and speed line. The outdoor eating areas are adjacent to the kitchen and provide students the option of covered or shaded seating under the existing evergreen trees.
