Southern Elementary School

Beaver Dam, Kentucky

This project renovated and modernized an elementary school that was more than 30 years old. Additions also were needed to accommodate the growing number of students. The design allowed for a staggered schedule that kept the existing facility in operation during the renovation and construction.

Additions include classrooms, resource rooms, specialty areas, and a new kitchen and cafeteria. The open commons area of the existing school was remodeled to include administrative areas, a media center and computer labs.

Specific areas of interest include the renovated entry, media center and cafeteria. Color and theme were a significant part of the project. Bright primary colors were used in common areas, and individual classrooms were decorated with specific motifs. The media center features a tiered reading nook separated by book columns for a quieter, more comfortable setting. The columns are detailed with specific titles selected by the students.
