Minisink Central School District, Natatorium

Slate Hill, New York

The district wanted a facility that would instill a sense of pride, enthusiasm and joy in students and in the entire community.

The solution consisted of an expressive roof structure in the form of a series of waves that would symbolize the movement of water in the pool below. The long span curving structural trusses were designed as a simple frame. The exterior materials mimicked the curve of the truss members. The translucent panels followed the shape of the trusses exactly, as did the roof, so at night the roof appears to hover above the rest of the building.

Inside and out, the new pool facility provides a welcoming and recognizable image for all who use and visit the school. The experience of watching an event in the pool is enhanced by the diffuse light and shadow created by the translucent panels through the structural members—delivering the pride, enthusiasm and joy that the school sought.
