This technologically advanced school fully accommodates a new math, science and technology magnet program and a comprehensive high school. It also is designed to support and encourage use by community residents and businesses

Constructed on a tight 30-acre urban site next to the Elizabeth River, the compact, three-story school houses an auditorium and gymnasium, and ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY1,800COST PER SQ FT$96.53FEATURED IN1998 Architectural Portfolio a 125-seat corporate-style lecture room, public-access TV studio, radio station and 24-hour media center.

An academic spine or concourse anchors the building and spans all three floors. All spaces are accessed from this promenade, easing circulation and aiding security.

The technology package, supported by a fiber-optic backbone, is accessed by touchscreen panels and centralized in a visible distribution center. The system provides fully integrated voice, data and video capabilities to every educational and staff space. All classrooms have 27-inch monitors, and the entire facility utilizes a CCTV security system.

Materials were selected for durability, function and aesthetics, and the HVAC system employs an energy-management system.
