Cole Canyon Elementary School was designed to reflect the style and spirit of the Murrieta area. The design reflects the metaphor of a rambling ranch in the way that the buildings appear to be added onto the existing structures over time.
The kindergarten area is modeled after a playful hay barn and uses the loft structure as a covered play area for the students. The CAPACITY840COST PER SQ FT$139.00FEATURED IN2001 Architectural Portfolio building represents the ranch house structure, while the multipurpose room symbolizes the main barn. The classrooms are grouped into upper and lower grades in separate corral areas, complete with teacher workrooms that allow for supervision.
The strong educational program is based on delivering fundamentals in relatively self-contained classrooms. District teachers determined that a 24-foot by 40-foot module for the classrooms would best serve instructional needs. As a result, the standard modular classrooms blend with the permanent construction, while providing classroom areas for teachers.
Allowing for community use of the playfields, adjacent park and the multipurpose building was challenging, yet successfully accomplished through the site configuration.
