The library/media center at Pioneer Elementary School is at the central axis of four classroom wings that are organized by grade level. The flexible learning space features a barrel-vaulted ceiling that provides clerestory windows on three sides to bathe the room in natural light and minimize the use of artificial lighting. The computer lab is adjacent to the main library. It has large windows and allows for computer instruction that will not disturb other classes or students in the library. Bookshelves are organized and sized to allow for adequate supervision of individuals and small-group instruction.
Pioneer Elementary School is part of the K-12 Valley View Community Unit School District 365-U, which serves the communities of Bolingbrook and Romeoville, Ill., about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. The building has a capacity of 800 students and offers a basic general instruction program for grades K to 5. The mission of the Pioneer Elementary School community is to celebrate the exploration of new frontiers in lifelong learning, while maximizing the development of each child’s potential in an every-changing world.
