South Seattle Community College (SSCC), a member of the Seattle Community Colleges, offers educationally diverse opportunities in a vibrant environment. Hindered in that goal by an inadequate, outdated library, SSCC decided to gut the facility and completely remodel it.
The architect completed the pre-design for the new library/learning resource center in the COST PER SQ FT$100.00FEATURED IN2001 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYLibraries/Media Centers 1990s. But by the time the state of Washington gave permission to proceed with the plans in 1995, the digital revolution had been unleashed. So, the placement of more than 100 public-access computers became crucial.
The architect designed a huge, three-story, window-lined rotunda and formed a computer commons on the ground floor below it, with traditional library stacks radiating in spokes from its center. The rotunda also allows natural light to flow into the interior spaces.
The project was built to house print and media collections, as well as computer services. The center also includes a television studio and production facility, electronic classroom, videoconferencing center, teaching center and several media laboratories.
