Kelvin Grove School is a facility for students in grades 4 to 8 located in the midst of a residential area. The district needed more classrooms; spaces to support a technology-enhanced curriculum; spaces to support art, music and physical education; and an organized, safe site.
The addition provides a new main entry for the school, a multipurpose gymnasium, a COST PER SQ FT$112.00FEATURED IN2001 Educational Interiors2001 Architectural PortfolioINTERIOR CATEGORYClassrooms classroom, a vocational-technology classroom, a new administration center and several additional classrooms. Another 12,000 square feet of existing area was renovated to provide a learning resource center, computer area, music/band classrooms and an art room.
In order to keep the ambitious program within budget, building materials, structure and HVAC systems were left exposed. Creative use of paint colors and floor-tile patterns help to unify the new and existing spaces.
The addition was situated to maximize a backyard area for the students’ outdoor activities. Existing traffic flow problems were managed by directing traffic from the narrow city streets and onto the front of the site, with two new student pick-up and dropoff areas.
