The design mandate for this project was to develop a thoroughly modern high school that can accommodate an enrollment of 900 students and be expanded to an enrollment of 1,100 in the future. It fully integrates current technologies, has the infrastructure to adapt to future technologies and creates a dynamic educational environment that will endure into COST PER SQ FT$100.00CITATIONWork in Progress CitationFEATURED IN2000 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYWork in Progress future.
The design organizes the academic spaces into three houses along one side of the plan and the larger public spaces such as the gymnasium, auditorium and cafeteria/commons along the other side of the plan. The wedge-shaped space in between contains administration and guidance, media center, technology and business education, and work and family studies.
The exterior is composed of a 50-50 mix of brick and integrally colored concrete block. The building has two covered circulation corridors that are enclosed by a two-story space functioning as a clerestory to maximize the amount of natural light. One of the corridors is flanked by openings in the floor plan that allow natural light down to the lowest portions of the building. The plan has been developed to accommodate additional classrooms at each of the academic pods to allow expansion to occur where it is needed most.
