This fast-track project transformed the first floor of an eight-story parking garage into prime university office space. The university needed to find space immediately. Many of the university departments and functions needed to be relocated to make way for the new city of San José/San José State University Joint Library.
There were concerns about the location, COST PER SQ FT$75.97FEATURED IN2000 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYRenovation light, energy efficiency, security and potential environmental hazards. The other challenge was the post-tension structure of the garage.
To accommodate the university’s need for flexible office space to meet changing technology needs, the design approach was to insert the office function into the exposed garage structure with minimal modifications. A raised-floor pedestal system was designed to address the sloping ground-floor parking slab. This decision allowed for all the electrical and mechanical systems to be located under the floor.
The new space houses Student Business Services, which includes a student-resource center, bursar’s offices, financial aid, student learning center, enrollment services, admissions and graduate studies.
