Accelerated Learning Laboratory

Worcester, Massachusetts

The Accelerated Learning Laboratory is an innovative program for advanced students in grades pre-K to 12. Spaces such as classrooms, kivas, discourse rooms and research areas are designed flexibly to encourage individual and group learning methods.

The plan accommodates 800 students plus a 75-car underground garage. The school is on a two-acre site within a ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$129.68CITATIONSpecialized Facility CitationFEATURED IN2000 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized historic neighborhood. The exterior masonry materials and colors were selected to enhance the context of late 19th-century homes. Exterior elevations consist of a series of smaller components and facades to reflect the scale of the neighborhood.

On the interior, the gymnasium, cafeteria and administration are centered in the building, flanked by the pre-K to 6 and grades 7 to12 schools. The dynamic etched-glass wall greets people as they enter the building. Each of the five classroom clusters is organized around the group-instruction kivas. Light, crisp colors were used to define the various levels.
